NANCY MEYERS THE INTERN
Mentorship Can Go Both Ways

I just watched the trailer for Nancy Meyers The Intern, coming to theaters on September 25th. It looks like it’s going to be right up there with The Holiday, Something’s Gotta Give, and It’s Complicated. Nancy Meyers is a master at exploring the intricate emotions and complex difficulties that relationships bring for women and men.

This film focuses on friendship, not romance. And, it pays homage to her dad. Anne Hathaway stars as Jules Ostin, a 30-something CEO of her own company (an online fashion site). Co-star Robert DeNiro is Ben Whittaker, a 70-year-old widower, and Jules’ new Intern. In my own sneak peek at The Intern, I couldn’t help thinking how a supposed hierarchy can be turned on its head.

Being at the top of your game doesn’t necessarily mean you’re secure with how you got there. Nor does it mean you believe you know what you’re doing. Or, even who, exactly, you are. I’d be willing to bet that Jules needs Ben more than he needs her. And, that turns mentorship on its head. I guess we could say, then, that mentorship goes both ways. And, that two people can have a lot to give each other. I’ll definitely be watching Nancy Meyers The Intern on the big screen and blogging my thoughts in September.
